Fruit compote is a sweet, chunky sauce made with fresh or frozen fruit and sugar, cooked on the stovetop for a brief time until the fruit has softened and collapsed. It’s one of those timeless recipes that is so simple, yet so delicious and full of flavour.
Our beautiful Christmas spiced mixed berry compote with homemade yogurt is made with a medley of berries, and lightly spiced with cinnamon and orange. It’s sweet, fragrant, slightly tart and super pretty. When you make this mixed berry compote with homemade yogurt you’ll wonder where it’s been all your life!
Enjoy mixed berry compote with homemade yogurt in the morning, for dessert or anytime in between. The best part about berry compote is that you can make it ahead, store it in the fridge in an airtight container and have beautiful, spiced berry sauce all week with minimal effort.
When you use frozen berries you can enjoy mixed berry compote with homemade yogurt any time of the year.
Mixed berry compote is the perfect accompaniment for any homemade yogurt you wish. For am extra thick and creamy texture, we dripped dairy milk yogurt for an hour before serving. For a more luxurious probiotic berry experience, serve the compote with homemade crème fraiche, quark or cultured cream.
A quarter cup of sugar makes a dessert-like compote. If your berries are naturally super sweet you could halve the amount of sugar. For a sugar-free version, use honey or maple syrup. Start with 2 tablespoons and add more to taste.
Use this recipe if you want a quick berry sauce for pancakes, crepes, granola, and much much more. Mixed berry compote can be served warm or chilled.
